The Herakleidon Museum is a private art museum in Athens. It was founded in 2004 and for the past 10 years has focused on hosting numerous cultural events in addition to the fine arts. In recent years, the Herakleidon Museum has developed into an interactive center for popularized science.
Of particular note is the core collection of contemporary painting and sculpture, which includes an impressive collection of works by Dutch artist Maurits Cornelis Escher. Equally fascinating is the section dedicated to the Antikythera mechanism.
However, the museum not only offers fascinating exhibitions, but also has an interesting link to Athens' past. The rails in the pavement in front of the museum are relics of the old streetcar network that ran in the Greek capital from 1882 until the 1950s.
