The Stoa of Attalos is a covered portico on the site of the Ancient Agora in Athens. The portico was originally built by order of King Attalos II of Pergamon in the 2nd century B.C.
The Stoa of Attalos was built between 159 and 138 BC on the orders of King Attalos II of Pergamon. The corridor, made of Pentelic marble and limestone, stretches 115 metres long and 20 metres wide. In ancient times, it served as a political and secular centre and meeting place for the free citizens of Athens – in contrast to the Acropolis, which was a cult centre. The most important exhibits on display here are linked to public life and various institutions of democracy in Athens.
