The Leaning Tower of Pisa – a landmark known worldwide for its unique tilt. This whimsical bell tower sits majestically in the Piazza dei Miracoli in the charming city of Pisa and is an absolute must-see for any traveller to Italy. The Piazza dei Miracoli itself is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a place of unparalleled historical significance.
The Leaning Tower of Pisa was built in the 12th century as a bell tower for the neighbouring Duomo di Pisa. Work on the tower began in 1173 under the direction of the master builder Bonanno Pisano.
Originally, the tower was to house an impressive bell for the Duomo di Pisa and at the same time serve as a symbol of the prosperity and power of the city of Pisa. At the time of its construction, Pisa was an important maritime republic and wanted to showcase its fame with the construction of this imposing tower.
Construction of this impressive bell tower began in 1173. However, problems soon arose during the construction process. The unstable ground on which the tower was built proved to be extremely difficult. Due to this ground condition, the tower began to lean to one side at an early stage. Over the centuries, several attempts to correct the tilt were unsuccessful. However, it was not until the end of the 20th century that a team of engineers and architects found a permanent solution. Between 1990 and 2001, restoration work was carried out that stabilised the tower at its current characteristic tilt of 5.5 degrees.
