The Casa Buonarroti museum is entirely dedicated to Michelangelo Buonarroti. Although the great painter, sculptor and architect never lived here, his family built the house in his memory – and decorated it with his works. At Casa Buonarroti you can admire two famous marble reliefs – masterpieces from Michelangelo’s early youth: the Madonna of the Stairs, an intense testimony to Michelangelo’s passionate study of Donatello, and the Battle of the Centaurs, an eloquent sign of his love for classical art.
But it is also worth opening the doors of the 17th-century palazzo to see the other objects collected here. Here, Michelangelo’s works are combined with the centuries-long history of the Buonarroti family, who did everything in their power to enlarge and beautify the residence, preserve valuable cultural artefacts (including the important archive and library) and collect rare works of art: paintings, sculptures, majolica, archaeological finds, which are now displayed on the two floors of the museum.
On the second floor, a specially designed room displays a selection from the collection of two hundred and five valuable drawings by Michelangelo.
