What awaits you on site

The BallinStadt Emigration Museum in Hamburg offers its visitors a fascinating journey into the history of the emigration of millions of people from Europe to the New World in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The museum is housed in a historic building complex and is a major attraction for history buffs, tourists and families alike.

Named after Albert Ballin, a visionary German shipowner of the early 20th century who made a major contribution to the development of passenger shipping, the BallinStadt Emigration Museum opened its doors in 2007. The museum's location on the River Elbe, close to Hamburg's historic emigration halls, emphasises the city's importance as one of Europe's most important emigration ports.

The exhibition in the BallinStadt Museum is designed to take visitors on a moving journey, from the reasons for emigration to the difficult living conditions on board and the arrival in the new home. Interactive exhibits, historical documents and personal stories convey a vivid picture of those times. Visitors can see real replicas of the immigrants' quarters and imagine what life on board must have been like.
