With over 200 years of history, the Botanical Garden in Hamburg is one of the oldest university gardens in Germany and one of the city’s oldest public institutions. Once a garden primarily used for research purposes by the University of Hamburg, the Hamburg Botanical Garden is now a popular retreat amidst the hustle and bustle of the city. Since 2012, the botanical garden has been called the Loki Schmidt Garden and is named after the wife of German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt, Hannelore ‘Loki’ Schmidt. Loki Schmidt was known for her passion for biology and nature, but also as a botanist, nature and plant conservationist. With its variety of plants, tropical greenhouses and attractions for families, the Loki-Schmidt-Garten is a favourite destination for those seeking relaxation in Hamburg. The area takes visitors to different continents: Asia, America (the flora is divided into North and South America) and the European forest can be found on the grounds. With a wide range of public events, ranging from weekly plant consultations, guided tours, lectures and seminars to exhibitions, plant fairs and special action days, the garden endeavours to fulfil its mission of providing information.
