With its richly decorated, neo-Gothic façade, the New City Hall on Marienplatz looks a lot older than it is. It was only built between 1867 and 1905 because the neighbouring Old City Hall had become too small for the Munich city administration. Your tour of the Munich City Hall takes you through its representative rooms and up to the City Hall balcony, the stage for the FC Bayern Munich championship celebrations (not in December). You will also visit the reading room of the law library. Your guide will tell you about the history of the town hall and explain the numerous figures from the city’s history that adorn the façade.

What makes the town hall unique?

One of the most important attractions is the carillon in the town hall tower, which attracts numerous onlookers every day at 11 a.m., 12 p.m. and, in summer, also at 5 p.m. The Münchner Kindl, the city’s emblem, watches over the town hall tower: the heraldic figure, a monk, is often referred to as Münchner Kindl. In addition, anyone born in Munich can call themselves Münchner Kindl.
