A dream of a castle – when Ludwig II wanted to rebuild the Palace of Versailles

What awaits you on site

Ludwig II, King of Bavaria, is remembered in the history of Bavaria as a passionate castle builder, particularly of the castles Neuschwanstein, Herrenchiemsee and Linderhof; he is also known as the ‘Fairytale King’. Inspired by the Palace of Versailles, Ludwig had a castle built on the Herreninsel in the Chiemsee. The magnificent staircase, the state bedroom and the Great Mirror Gallery were designed with particular extravagance.

With its elegant gardens and walkways and its luscious interiors of gold, glass, and porcelain, the castle is a visually overwhelming monument to opulence. It also reflects the eccentric and troubled personality of Ludwig with features such as the celebrated elevated dining table, which could be raised and lowered through the floor to the kitchens below so that the reclusive king did not have to see his servants.

The state rooms of Herrenchiemsee New Palace can only be visited as part of a guided tour. These tours take place regularly and your place is already secured when you book the excursion.

About the excursion

Look forward to go on a train and boat trip to Herrenchiemsee, the stunning palace on an island on Chiemsee lake. Known as ‘the Bavarian Sea,’ Chiemsee is the largest of many lakes near Munich. We take you on a boat trip to two islands: the Herreninsel (the "Men’s Island", location of the palace) and the smaller Fraueninsel (the "Women’s Island"), with its lovely Benedictine Convent, whose origins stretch back 1300 years. The complete day trip to Herrenchiemsee is one of the most unique and beautiful tourist-experiences you can have in Bavaria. Palaces, lakes, mountains: the full Bavarian experience. Just a short train ride from Munich, the Royal Castle of Herrenchiemsee is a glittering jewel on a lake island. Your guide will accompany you there and provide you with all the mystical history of the castle and its builder.
