The Siegestor (Victory Gate) is an impressive triumphal arch in Munich. On the top you can see a lion-quadriga with Bavaria, the state’s patroness. Walk through this famous landmark. Today only pedestrians are allowed to pass the gate while cars have to use the streets around. The Siegestor separates the two Munich districts Schwabing and Maxvorstadt. At the same time it is the border between the streets Ludwigstraße and Leopoldstraße which is a popular strolling promenade. Ludwig I of Bavaria commissioned the gate in honour of the Bavarian army in 1940. The Siegestor was inspired by the Arch of Constantine in Rome. Even today it is one of Munich’s most famous architectural works. Especially during the dark hours of the day a visit is highly recommended. In the evening the gate is amazingly illuminated which makes it even more impressive.
