The Theresienwiese transforms once a year into the colourful world of the Oktoberfest. Celebrate in one of the famous tents that offer seats to several thousand people. Have fun in one of the many fairground rides und mingle with visitors from all over the world. Witness the program’s highlights such as the entry of the restaurateurs and breweries, the beer barrel tapping when the lord mayor opens the Oktoberfest with the famous "O'zapft is!" ("It's tapped!") or the costume and riflemen parade. Other important parts of the festival are huge amount of beer, traditional dishes and the Bavarian costumes: dirndl and leather trousers.
Did you know that the first Oktoberfest was held 1810 as a festive horse race in honour of the wedding of Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen? Since that the place is called Theresienwiese which means Theresa's meadow. Since then the Oktoberfest evolved into the world’s largest folk festival. Today it’s impossible to imagine Munich without the Oktoberfest. Following the example of Munich there are many smaller and larger Oktoberfest celebrations all around Germany and the world.
The 188th Oktoberfest will be held from Sept. 16 - Oct. 3, 2023.
