Museum Brandhorst focuses on the examination of personalities of 20th and 21st century art. Since its opening in 2009, the museum has established itself as one of the central locations for contemporary art in Germany. Behind the spectacular façade made of 36,000 ceramic rods, visitors from all over the world can experience top works of art from the 1960s to the present day. With well over 100 works by Andy Warhol, the collection of the most famous pop artist can hardly be compared with any other European collection. The focus on over 170 works by the American artist Cy Twombly is unique in the world. Pop Art and expressive painting are just a few of the numerous movements represented in the museum, alongside Arte Povera and Minimal Art. Pioneering artists to be discovered include Bruce Nauman, Sigmar Polke and Gerhard Richter. In addition to the avant-garde of the 1960s and 70s, postmodernism is also represented by Cady Noland and Jeff Koons.
The Brandhorst Museum is also worth seeing architecturally. The multi-coloured façade consists of 36,000 ceramic rods that echo the colours of the surrounding buildings. Inside, the imposing wooden staircase and daylight rooms invite visitors to explore the Brandhorst Collection and changing special exhibitions of contemporary art.
The unique ambience of the Museum Brandhorst is complemented by a culinary offering: the daytime café, which offers coffee and cake as well as lunch, was designed especially for the museum.
