The Schack Collection, located on Prinzregentenstraße in Munich, is a fascinating museum dedicated to 19th-century German painting. Founded by Adolf Friedrich Graf von Schack, a passionate art collector and man of letters, the museum offers a unique insight into the pictorial world of late Romanticism.
The collection includes some 180 paintings by German artists and presents important works by Arnold Böcklin, Moritz von Schwind, Franz von Lenbach, Anselm Feuerbach and others. Count Schack specifically promoted young, still unknown artists whose works were filled with a “poetic spirit” and formed a counterpoint to the prevailing realism of the time.
Visitors can immerse themselves in the world of myths, legends and places of longing in the museum's atmospherically designed rooms. The paintings tell stories of love and death, show distant lands and times gone by. In addition to original works, the collection also includes some 80 copies of paintings by Old Masters, in particular Venetian artists of the Renaissance.
