The birth of an heir to the throne of the Electors of Savoy in 1662 was the reason for the construction of the Nymphenburg Palace complex. In 1664, construction began. At that time, today hardly imaginable, Nymphenburg was located in an open field, two hours away from the residence in Munich. Today it is a green oasis for everyone in the middle of the city. But Nymphenburg is not only the spacious palace complex of the Bavarian rulers, but also the extensive park with unique water features, a rich sculpture collection and extraordinary buildings in the park: the park castles. During a tour, you can take a look at the room where King Ludwig II was born and at the world-famous Beauty Gallery of King Ludwig I. The originally baroque ornamental garden was repeatedly modified and expanded over the years and now presents itself as an English landscape garden of the 19th century. To visit the park castles, we recommend an extended walk through the 200-hectare palace park. This way, you can explore the park castles of Badenburg with its impressive swimming pool, the Asian-inspired Pagodenburg, the Magdalenenklause, which appears to be an artificial ruin, and the Amalienburg hunting lodge at your leisure.
The ‘Nymphenburg Summer Residence’, built in the Italian style, was initially just a massive cubic pavilion, surrounded by the Hofmarkskirche church, a few ancillary and farm buildings, and a small, walled garden laid out in geometric shapes. The palace in its first form was almost completed by 1679. However, the building was extended by further buildings in the following decades, because Nymphenburg Palace remained a favourite residence of the Bavarian kings for generations.
