The Museo Pio Monte della Misericordia in Naples is a unique institution that combines art, history and mercy. Founded in 1602 by seven young Neapolitan noblemen, it continues to serve as a centre for charity and cultural heritage to this day.
Located in a magnificent 17th-century building in the heart of Naples, the museum offers visitors a fascinating journey through the history of mercy. With 770 square metres of exhibition space, it presents an impressive collection of some 160 paintings from the 15th to the 20th century, as well as over 1000 art objects.
The centrepiece of the museum is undoubtedly Caravaggio's masterpiece ‘The Seven Works of Mercy’. This monumental altarpiece, painted in 1607, attracts visitors from all over the world. It depicts the seven works of mercy that play a central role in the Christian tradition in a single, complex composition.
In addition to this masterpiece, the museum houses an important collection of paintings, the Quadreria, with works by renowned Neapolitan artists from the 17th century. The museum also has an extensive historical archive and a library with 17,000 volumes that offer a deep insight into the history of the institution and Naples.
