When you think of Naples, pizza may come to mind. But for history buffs, the National Archaeological Museum of Naples is the ultimate gem of the city. The museum houses a proud selection of artifacts from the ancient Greco-Roman world. From finely crafted ceramics to sculptures, each artifact is a testament to the artistic talent of ancient civilizations.
The collection is divided into four sections: 1. the Farnese Collection: Greek and Roman sculptures from Campania - including the impressive sculptures of Hercules and Atlas, 2. the Egyptian Collection, 3. the Secret Cabinet: an extensive collection of ancient Roman erotic frescoes, vases and artefacts from Pompeii, 4. finds from the Bay of Naples, prehistoric finds and finds and copies from Pompeii, such as the papyri from the Villa dei Papiri.
One of the museum's biggest attractions is the extraordinary collection of frescoes from Pompeii and Herculaneum. These colorful murals provide a detailed insight into the lives, hopes and artistic interests of the inhabitants of these ancient cities. The subjects range from everyday life and mythology to landscapes and portraits, with each painting telling a unique story.
