The actual castle district is surrounded by a 1,200 metre long wall with nine towers, originally around 40 metres high, and a 27 metre wide moat. On the western side, the wall is interrupted by the fortified residential tower. This has a square floor plan with sides 16.20 metres long and is six storeys high. At around 50 metres high, it is one of the tallest residential towers in France. But the thickness of its walls is also impressive: they are around 3.30 metres thick.
The palace buildings, the King’s Pavilion and the Queen’s Pavilion, stand opposite each other in the southern courtyard. In the centre of the complex is the castle chapel called Sainte-Chapelle.
The palace gardens were designed in the 19th century in the style of English landscape gardens. Napoleon III gave it to Paris as a public institution in 1860, covering an area of almost 10 square kilometres.
