The Musée de l’Ordre de la Libération is located in the Invalides Cathedral and focuses on the history of the "Order of Liberty", which was founded by General de Gaulle in 1940 to honour civilian and military communities or individuals who distinguished themselves in the efforts to liberate France and the French Empire.

The awarding of the order was discontinued on 23 January 1946. Later, there were only two exceptions: Charles de Gaulle awarded the Ordre de la Libération to Winston Churchill on 18 June 1958 and to King George VI on 2 April 1960.
