What awaits you on site

The Chapelle expiatoire (expiatory chapel) was built by order of Louis XVIII on the site of the former Madeleine cemetery (Cimetière de la Madeleine) and is a memorial to Louis XVI and his wife Marie-Antoinette.

The Chapelle expiatoire stands on the site of the old cemetery of La Madeleine. During the French Revolution, the mortal remains of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette were buried here, as well as the bodies of around 500 people who had been executed under the guillotine on the Place de la Révolution (today’s Concorde). During the Restoration, Louis XVIII commissioned the architect Pierre Fontaine to build a memorial chapel. Work began in 1816 and was completed in 1826. In the nave, visitors are greeted by two sculptural groups of the sovereigns: "The Redemption of Louis XVI" by Bosio and "Marie-Antoinette, supported by Religion" by Cortot. The lower chapel contains the remains of the old cemetery, making the chapel a burial place of the Revolution.
