The Sistine Chapel in the Vatican, or Cappella Sistina as the Italians call it, is one of the top sights in Rome. It was built between 1475 and 1483 under Pope Sixtus IV, after whom the Sistine Chapel is named. It is best known as the place where the conclave is held. During this meeting of the cardinals of the Roman Catholic Church, they elect the Pope. It is also home to some of the most famous paintings in the world.

Discover the world-famous wall and ceiling frescoes

The murals in the Sistine Chapel are world-famous. Works by various Renaissance artists, including Sandro Botticelli, Pietro Perugino, Domenico Ghirlandaio, Cosimo Rosselli, Biagio d’Antonio and Luca Signorelli, can be found here. Scenes from the lives of Jesus Christ and Moses are depicted. The paintings on the ceiling are by Michelangelo. They depict various scenes from the Old Testament: "Creation", "Adam and Eve" and "Noah". The most famous of these paintings is probably the "Creation of Adam". The depiction of the "Last Judgement" is also one of Michelangelo’s most important works, as well as that of the entire art epoch.
