The Acropolis and its famous temples

Today, the Acropolis stands as a symbol of democracy and civilisation. At the time of ancient Athens, it was a centre of social life. Later, it served as a sacred place for the gods and as a symbol of the prosperity of the city of Athens.

In 480 BC, the Persians completely destroyed the main temple and a large part of the Acropolis, but the building complex was rebuilt according to new plans.

The entire complex is home to numerous historical monuments and temples dedicated to various gods and heroes. The Parthenon is the most famous and best-preserved example of this. The decorative marble and statues are considered outstanding examples of ancient Greek art.

The Acropolis has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986.
