The small church of Santa Maria dei Miracoli is located in the Cannaregio district and is considered a jewel of the district due to its special marble decoration. The church itself contains the work ‘Virgin Mary with Child’, which was declared miraculous by Pope Sixtus IV and is still considered miraculous by many believers today. This painting was the starting point for the construction of the church in the late 15th century. However, as only a small, rectangular plot of land was available, a single-nave church with a barrel vault was built.
The Chiesa di Santa Maria dei Miracoli, also known as the ‘Church of Miracles’, is an outstanding example of Venetian Renaissance architecture. Its exterior is decorated with beautiful pink and white marble, giving it a remarkable and inviting appearance. The elaborate design and use of marble in the façade and interior of the church make it an outstanding work of art.
