The Chiesa di Santo Stefano is located in Campo Santo Stefano, one of the largest squares in Venice, and dates back to the 15th century. It is considered one of the most important late Gothic churches and has a facade made of high-quality marble. Its history dates back to the 13th century, and over the centuries it has been renovated and rebuilt several times. The church’s current appearance largely dates back to the 14th century and represents Venetian Gothic in all its splendour. The façade of the Chiesa di Santo Stefano is impressive and draws visitors’ attention. The interior of the sacristy contains an extensive collection of paintings from the Venetian Renaissance by artists such as Tintoretto, De ‘Pitoti and Vivarini, as well as some impressive sculptures. One of the most outstanding works is the altarpiece ‘Martyrdom of St Stephen’ by Tintoretto. Another unusual feature is that boats can pass under the church.
