The three islands of Murano, Burano and Torcello are considered the most famous islands off the coast of Venice and have a lot to offer. The island tour starts in Venice and makes its first stop at Murano. This island is famous for its hand-made glass, which is why a glass-blowing workshop is visited there. The tour then continues to the island of Burano. The colourful fishermen’s houses make you feel warmly welcomed and you can also admire the lace-making craft here. The last stop is on the island of Torcello. The ancient cathedral of St. Maria Assunta and the church of St. Forsa from the 11th and 12th centuries are particularly worth a visit.
Murano is not actually an island, but a group of seven islands separated by canals and connected by eleven bridges. Nevertheless, it is usually referred to as the island of Murano. Around five thousand people live here and earn their living from tourism, of course, but also from artistic glass blowing – or fishing.
The island of Burano is located about an hour north-east of the historic city centre of Venice and, with over 2,700 inhabitants, is one of the most densely populated islands in the Venetian lagoon. This is also actually a group of four islands, separated from each other by wide canals but connected by eight bridges. Burano is famous for its colourful houses, which shine in every colour. Lace-making also had a long tradition on Burano, and the island was once made rich by the artful reticella technique.
The tiny island of Torcello has only a few inhabitants. Its main attractions are the Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta, which has Venetian-Byzantine mosaics and offers a view of the neighbouring island of Burano from the bell tower, as well as the pillar-free Ponte del Diavolo bridge and the stone throne Trono di Attila.
